Windows NT, 2000, and XP hide an hidden Internet server that is running by default. It receives and accepts, among other things, unsolicited network messages that cause pop-up dialog boxes to appear on the desktop. Internet Spammers have discovered this and are spraying pop-up Spam across the Internet. The Windows Messenger server should never have been running by default, and Microsoft has finally fixed that in Windows 2003, but users of previous Windows need to take responsibility for this themselves. |

This application is great for those who want to know exactly how their computer is infected and the best ways to get rid of particularly nasty spyware components. Spy Cleaner Gold stands out in the spyware-removal field, but you'll have to pay for the quality. A slick interface sports controls similar to its competitors, offering options for scanning your drives and Registry, updating online, and saving the last, best system set-up as a backup. Scanning is fairly quick compared to other programs in the category. We especially liked the way this application displays results, separating different kinds of adware and spyware into categories so we knew in what manner our computer is infected. We also appreciated that this program calls out spyware that it cannot remove, directing us to alternate removal methods. While it faces challenges from excellent freeware programs, the added categorization and honesty when dealing with nasty infections makes Spy Cleaner Gold a worthwhile purchase. - What is spyware/adware? Spyware/Adware are those software which send your personal data like, your browsing behavior, your computer's system configuration - How did I get it? If you are like most people on the Net, you've most likely downloaded music on the Net. Did you know that when you use these file sharing services, they infect your computer with Spy Ware or Ad Ware? Spybot Search and Destroy searches your hard drive for so-called spy- or adbots; that is, little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs display. Many of these modules also transmit information, including your surfing behavior on the Internet. If it finds such modules, it can remove them. In most cases the host still runs fine after removing the spyware/adware. Another feature is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three major browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, and Opera. |
