Note: Linus' policy of not preserving backward compatibility in kernel development has broken Filemon and made obsolete the approach it takes to monitor file system access on recent kernel releases. Unfortunately, there's no alternative mechanism for monitoring file system accesses (including reads) in real-time, and while other system-level tools that take the same approach as Filemon of patching the system-call table (like Intel's Vtune) work-around the changes with hacks, I'm not willing to invest the time on something so prone to breaking.
Filemon monitors and displays file system activity on a system in real-time. Its advanced capabilities make it a powerful tool for exploring the way Linux works, seeing how applications use the files and shared libraries, and tracking down problems in system or application file configurations. Filemon's timestamping feature will show you precisely when every open, read, write or delete, happens, and its status column tells you the outcome. Filemon is so easy to use that you'll be an expert within minutes. It begins monitoring when you start it, and its output window can be saved to a file for off-line viewing. It has full search capability, and if you find that you're getting information overload, simply set up one or more filters.
Filemon for Linux requires Linux 2.4. Filemon versions are also available for NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP 64-bit Edition, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME. |

K-LOC Calculator v1.0

Over the years, the software development community at large has gotten a whole host of valuable information about project management from good old Big Blue (IBM)... I should clarify that, valuable information on how NOT to manager a project. For fun, I decided to resurrect one of their worst ideas ever; K-LOC (or more appropriately, paying programmers based on K-LOC).
The AnalogX K-LOC Calculator is the exact opposite of PCalc, my programmers calculator - this has almost no real world application, but it is fun for the number crunchers out there who want some sort of metric about the project. Sure, the metric is completely arbitrary, but hey, you can feed it into a spreadsheet! heheh... Actually, I would say that K-LOC does have it's uses (a simple way to measure project complexity, perhaps), but there aren't too many.
AnalogX K-LOC Calculator can scan any number of files, any wildcard extension, and even recursively check subdirectories. It returns not only the total project K-LOC rating, but the average file K-LOC rating and total file size of the project as well! |
